Rehana's Maya - 6.18.09 - Gaithersburg, MD

Rehana had a gathering of her close friends and family at her parents home Wednesday evening. The ceremony started at around 8 pm with the bride-to-be entering the room with a veil over her head. Her close friends guided her to her sitting area and the ceremony began.

The room was decorated with the color yellow. There is a sort of auspicious meaning the the color in which the bride was also wearing yellow.

The ceremony itself was quite informal. Rehana's friends and family each took turns feeding her and placing a turmeric paste on her face. They had a fun time letting her have it.

Ok, so I think the meaning of the event is that the bride is supposed to be "beautified" before her big wedding day and in truth, study actually does show that turmeric has some beautifying qualities to it.

The Maya is also known as Haldi which literally means turmeric in Hindi.
